Track number one (the title track): A soulful love song with a slow, memorable beat. Ms. Melua's voice shows great range here. 4/5.

Track number two: A funky, bluesy tune with class-warfare undertones. 3/5.

Track number three: Lovely melody, with a tone that gradually builds and falls in repetition (except in the chorus). 4/5.

Track number four: Funky. Sounds like something they'd play in a strip club. Can't wait to see the music video! (Ms. Melua is quite attractive...) 4/5.

Track number five: Too slo-o-o-ow. Music for insomniacs. 2/5.

Track number six: Nice tune, until you realize it's basically a song about a chick trying to justify having had sexual intercourse with someone she barely knows the night before. 3/5.

Track number seven: Amateurish song about the religiously-divided city of Belfast. If you can get past the inane lyrics, the tune is decent. 3/5.

Track number eight: Best song on the album. Will almost certainly be a part of a future Disney animated movie's soundtrack. Hauntingly-beautiful, bitter-sweet song. 5/5.

Track number nine: Attempts to be sensual by using erotic double-entendre. Succeeds only in being corny. 3/5.

Track number ten: Decent for filler. But it's still filler. 2/5.

Track number eleven: It's a "dedication" song. Be afraid. Be very afraid. 1/5.

Track number twelve: Odd song. More filler. And pretty much crap. 2/5.

Overall: 3/5. Worth buying, but not for every song. They could have cut off the last three tracks and this CD would be missing nothing. Shades of both Norah Jones and a young Jewel.

They won a must-win game, and now lead the series 2-1. If they win Game Four, they will likely be the champs. But if they let the Lakers tie this series back up, the series will be destined to head back to LA. And that isn't so good...

Possible Error

I most recently posted that Rasheed Wallace fouled Shaq on a lay-up, giving the Lakers a three point play with under a minute left. I may have been wrong. It may in fact have been Ben Wallace who committed that foul.

Anyway, Game Three nears. The Pistons MUST win this one if they want to win this series. I'll be watching, and posting...

Sigh...

Detroit was just a few seconds away from going up 2-0. Then Kobe tied it up with a three point shot. Then the Pistons collapsed in overtime. And lost 99-91.

I blame Rasheed for this loss. With less than a minute remaining, he fouled Shaq on an easy lay-up, giving the Lakers a three point play. This allowed LA to cut Detroit's lead from 6 to 3. If Rasheed doesn't foul in this situation, Detroit is still up by four. And the Lakers can't tie it with one shot. And the Pistons likely win this game.

Then, after Kobe nailed his game-tying three pointer, Rasheed bobbled the ball and turned it over with 2 seconds left, blowing Detoit's chance to win it in regulation.

And then, just for good measure, he put up a horrid looking three point shot early in the overtime period, helping the Lakers maintain their momentum and extend their lead.

If Detroit had gone up 2-0, with the next three games to be played at The Palace, this series would have pretty much been in the books. But now it's all tied up, and Los Angeles has the momentum. Detroit needs to win Game Three, or else they're in real trouble...

This is big news. The paid-media attacks on Kerry should continue for the rest of March, at least. Then, after having defined the man for the public, Bush should let up until the summer. He should save the majority of his cash for the post-Labor Day election-year frenzy.

But Kerry is looking weaker and weaker. It seems only a downturn in the economy (unlikely) would kill a Bush re-election now.

Looking back on Bush vs. Gore, Professor Joseph Olson of the Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota, gives us a shrewd perspective. Adding up the counties in the U.S. won by the two candidates, it was Gore 677, Bush 2,434. Taking the population of those counties, it was 143 million for Bush, 127 million for Gore. In square miles of land won, Gore 580,000, Bush 2,427,000. The murder rate in Gore counties, 13.2 per 100,000 residents, contrasted with 2.1 in the Bush counties.

NH SHOCK POLL

Two things are worthy of note here.

#1 - Bush, who was getting crushed in all the previous NH polls by Kerry, is now in the lead (with or without Nader). This is a state Bush narrowly won in 2000. I had written off this state in 2004, and it looks like I'm wrong. My apologies.

#2 - Check out the potential Nader vote. Only 4% of Dems in NH are likely to vote for him. But 9% of Republican voters are leaning towards Nader (the same number Kerry gets among Republicans)! To me, this is a possible sign that McCain Republicans in the Granite State are still looking for a White Knight to steal the show. Maybe Jesse Ventura will run as the VP pick for Nader in 2004, and they will wind up taking away the election from Bush? Time will tell...

Insight

First, read this.

Important points:

Arizona is leaning Kerry. Bush must stress his support for a drug entitlement here. That could be the deciding factor in a close race in a state with lots of old people.

California is looking like Kerry territory. Governor Arnold needs to get out in front and boost Bush if there is any hope of a Bush win in this Electoral College vote-rich state. Otherwise, it's a done deal for Kerry.

Florida: Bush needs to win this. He's currently behind, but the political machinery in this state is in his favor (his brother is Governor). Jewish voters are important in this state, and I suspect they will be more likely to vote for Bush in 2004 than they were in 2000. No recount here. Hopefully...

Michigan: If Kerry chooses Gephardt as his running mate, Michigan is in the bag for the Dems. But if he chooses someone else, I suspect a close match-up. I still think Kerry gets the Electoral College votes, though.

Nevada: Bush must win here. His support for placing nuclear waste inside Yucca Mountain won't help. Kerry might pick this one off.

New Hampshire: Kerry will win. The Democrats have managed to inflame the populace here, and I expect they will carry the day in November.

Ohio: Bush is currently down. He must win this state. He and Rove know this. They will put all the needed resources into capturing Ohio in 2004, and they will be successful.

PA: This state went Gore in 2000. It would help Bush a great deal in 2004 if he can win it. And he can, despite the Democrat Party being in control. Focus some ads here, and it's a huge pick-up for Bush in 2004.

It's not listed, but I suspect NY is also in play in 2004. A good convention there could win Bush the Empire State. And the election.

You can do almost anything in the Netherlands. Drugs, fine. Prostitution, okay. Sex with animals, no problem.

Oh yeah, and the Netherlands also allows Gay Marriage. One wonders whether there is any connection between a society that allows same-sex marriage and one which finds it difficult to ban intercourse with ponies.

The moment same-sex marriage becomes the law of the land in the US, I am going to demand that polygamy also be legalized. After all, if the average Joe has two or three wives to come home to each night, instances of adultery will surely decrease...

Bush better hope the election doesn't come down to a recount of the votes in Key West. The homosexuals are gonna vote for ABB (Anybody But Bush) in 2004.

To make up for the loss of gay votes, maybe Bush should court black voters by mentioning his support for a stable Haiti and Liberia. While Clinton did nothing to stop the slaughter in Rwanda, Bush is doing what he can to prevent such horrors from occuring in other mostly-black countries.

BUSH AND GAYS

Bush came out the other day and supported amending the US Constitution to codify marriage as a contract between one man and one woman. I support the goal of this Amendment. But I oppose the actual Amendment, for these reasons:

- It won't pass

There is almost no chance of this Amendment being passed by 67% of BOTH Houses of Congress. The House of Representatives may give it the OK, but the Senate will almost certainly refuse it (more time between elections for Senators). And even if the Senate supports it, it will take a long time to get the needed 38 states to sign on (well after the 2004 election is held). In the meanwhile, the press will paint Bush as an intolerant bigot who is pandering to his base in a desperate attempt to win the re-election his father could not gain.

- Bush Loses Gay Votes

Gays probably make up about 5% of the voting population. I cannot imagine too many of them voting for him after he supports something they oppose so strongly. While most of them would not have voted for him in the first place, some would have. They won't now. In a close election (like 2004 is shaping up to be), losing the support of "swing" voters (pardon the pun) is nothing to sneeze at...

- The Religious Right

These folks will almost certainly commit numerous gaffes over the next 8 months or so, forcing Bush to either support their comments or distance himself from them. It's a no win for the Prez. If he distances himself from their comments, he will lose support from his base. If he supports their statements, he will lose support from needed independents. Kerry can continue to oppose the Amendment while saying he "personally" thinks marriage should be between a man and a woman. Bush will end up on the firing line, not Kerry.

Things are looking rough for Bush in November. Kerry has plenty of weaknesses, but the media seem to ignore many of them. Bush's main hope rests with Nader. If Nader stays in the race until Election Day, Bush will probably win. But I suspect a last minute pull-out by Nader (late October?), in which he endorses Kerry. This will do nothing but harm Bush.

Right now, I put the race at 50-50. If Edwards or Dean were the nominee, I might not be so concerned. But Kerry completely sickens me. Physicially. He must be stopped before he becomes President. We must support Bush, warts and all. If not, we risk horrors over the next 4 years that are unspeakable (namely, seeing that phony New England bastard on the television every single day).

Maine - Dean loses a close one to Kerry, but decides it's close enough to remain in the race.

TN - Edwards in first, Clark second, Kerry third. This result could seriously damage Kerry's campaign, since if he can't even come in first or second in a Democrat Primary in a Southern state, how will he do in the South against Bush in November?

Virginia - Edwards in a blow-out. Suddenly Kerry looks beatable. Dean bays for blood in Wisconsin. Fun!

Don't these fucking idiots realize that our sworn enemies probably read the NYT? This was, after all, an "internal Army history of the war ." That means it wasn't meant for public consumption. But the NYT doesn't care. If future soldiers, marines, sailors, and airmen die because of this security leak, they won't lose a minute of sleep. They'll just blame it on rich, white, male, Republicans.

God, I fucking hate the New York Times...

My Opinion On Gay Marriage

The proposed Constitutional Amendment to ban it won't pass. There isn't presently enough support for it. 67% of both the House and Senate, plus ratification in 38 states, is no easy task to accomplish.

Bush would be better off encouraging and signing a federal law banning gay marriage. He could easily get majorities in both Houses for this, and that would reassure his conservative base in an election year.

Then, if the US Supreme Court ever dared to declare this federal law Unconstitutional, Bush may be able to ride the wave of populist outrage to quickly push an Amendment through.

But not now. If the Amendment is voted down, it will be a huge (and counter-productive) defeat for Bush. Gay voters who would normally support Bush will either stay at home or defect to the Democrat nominee. And the hopes of an Amendment to ban gay marriage will disappear.

In the long run, barring an Amendment, gay marriage will become law. The courts like the idea, as do younger voters. The only firewall is an Amendment. I support such an Amendment. Just not now...

I'll be going to Orlando tomorrow to go clubbing with Joe and Mike. This is to celebrate my upcoming 26th birthday. Rebekah got fired at work today. I (so far) have "A"s in all my classes this semester. I don't work tomorrow, but I do next Friday.
